mail used to be delivered by dogsled originally in alaska, but dogsled DID obviously take a long time. The people of Nome decide that using an airplane to deliver mail will be more efficient, making the sled team feel unimportant. There is a dogsled race against the airplane to see who is fastest, and Kodi (Balto's son) who is so proud and idolizes his dad (Balto) who saved the dying children of Nome, thinks that his dad will be able to beat the airplane in the race. [note that Kodi was on the mail sled team and was very proud of his job]. Balto, however, knows that there is possibly no way of himself beating the airplanes speed, but he is afraid to tell Kodi, because he believes that it'll crush Kodi's spirit of looking up to Balto and thinking that he will win. So, during the race, the plane crashes pon a mountain side, and Balto finds the plane, saving the pilots life.
